The Pakistan Bureau of Statistics (PBS) organized DataFest 2025 at the Pak-China Friendship Centre, Islamabad, bringing together policymakers, researchers, and innovators to explore data-driven insights for Pakistan’s digital transformation.
Dr. Shakeel, Incharge and Assistant Professor of Economics at the Virtual University of Pakistan, delivered an insightful presentation on “Blockchain, Crypto, and Web 3: Data Insights for Pakistan’s Digital Future.”
In his presentation, Dr. Shakeel discussed the economic implications of blockchain and cryptocurrency adoption in Pakistan, with a particular focus on remittance channels, consumer-side benefits, and a theoretical model of new technology adoption. He emphasized how emerging technologies align with Securities and Exchange Commission of Pakistan (SECP) and State Bank of Pakistan (SBP) policies on digital finance and crypto regulation.
Highlighting the economic enablers and risks of crypto adoption, Dr. Shakeel encouraged PBS data developers and researchers to build data insights that support evidence-based policymaking in Pakistan’s digital economy.
“Blockchain and Web 3 represent more than just technological innovation — they mark a fundamental shift in how economies organize, share, and secure data,” said Dr. Shakeel. “Pakistan’s preparedness to adopt these technologies responsibly will shape its position in the global digital landscape.”
The presentation was well received by PBS officials and participants, who appreciated the futuristic perspective and practical relevance of blockchain and Web 3 technologies in shaping Pakistan’s digital and financial ecosystem.
The Virtual University of Pakistan congratulates Dr. Shakeel for representing the institution at a national platform and contributing valuable insights toward Pakistan’s digital future.
